What Indie Musicians Can Learn from Iconic Music Videos

If you can create a music video that can withstand the test of time that could really set off your music career.  Here are some legendary music videos you can study for inspiration.

1) “Thriller” by Michael Jackson

“Thriller” was ground breaking and is one of the greatest music videos of all time.

Why it worked:  It worked because it merged music and film industries together, and that was completely new ground.  It was an extended length video with a more complex story line than most music videos at the time.  “Thriller” stood apart from the other videos, and still does to this day.

What indie artists can learn: “Thriller” tells a great compelling story in a longer music video. When you create your video, really think through your storyboard first to make sure you capture your viewers attention so they’ll watch your video all the way through

2) “Take on Me” by A-ha

This video incorporated live action with pencil sketch animation.

Why it worked: Director Steve Barron (he also directed Michael Jackson’s  “Billie Jean”) helped create a video that is interesting to watch even decades later.

What indie artists can learn: It’s a good idea to incorporate other forms of art into Music videos to create something out of the ordinary.

3) “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen

The video does a great job incorporating acapella and live performance.

Why it worked: “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a great example of  how you can benefit by taking a creative idea and  keeping the execution of that idea simple.

What indie artist can learn: Although there are some special effects in the video, the theatrics shine .
