Indie Community Dissapointed with Friday Global Release Day

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is aligning with major labels, the RIAA, HMB, Spotify, and others to move forward with a Friday worldwide album release date, starting by summer 2015.

The independent community vocally expressed support for a Monday worldwide album release day instead, so they have the ability to re-stock and rectify errors before the weeks second peak.

A move to Fridays will require the independent community to make changes to supply chains, charts, and marketing strategies.  Some retailers like Target are reluctant to pay the money to make the switch and have reportedly considered dropping music altogether.

50 national markets are involved so its no surprise that there are objections in some markets.

It will be interesting to see how a worldwide album release date in the summer of 2015 will implemented, and the overall effect on all parties involved, including the end consumers.
