Grooveshark Loses in Court Again
Streaming service Grooveshark has survived many lawsuits over the years, but the court decision issued Friday may be very difficult to overcome. A motion for summary judgement was granted by Judge Alison Nathan of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York on claims that Grooveshark’s parent company, Escape Media Group Inc, infringed its copyrights.
Based on the courts finding that 2,807 EMI copyrighted sound recordings existed on Grooveshark’s servers, total damages could amount to $420 million. The maximum statutory penalty per infringement is $150,000 for willful violations, but this amount can be reduced.
Although the court has set a conference for May 8th for remaining issues and damages, Grooveshark will be able to appeal the judgement.
