Avoiding Common Songwriting Obstacles

Ben Camp is a successful songwriter.  His song “Gold” was a hit for Victoria Justice and it has received more than 14 million YouTube views.  Ben shares his perspectives on the art and craft of songwriting below.

When you’re working with someone who excites you with raw talent, what type of issues come up that you can help them with?

Most singers with fantastic voices know what range makes them sound the best.  As a result, many tend to write the melody of their song only in their sweet spot, which robs them of the ability to use a melody that impacts the listeners emotions.  Taking your song up an octave and hearing the change in a singers voice is a powerful tool.

What problems pop up most often with lyrics?

Many young songwriters fall into common traps. One trap is they use the same rhyme scheme in every section. If you do this too much you can bore your listeners. Another trap is using too many clichés. Try singing vowel sounds over the melody  and you can increase your own personal flavor in your song or track, to avoid this issue. Also actually sing your lyrics so you can get a feel for how your writing translates to song.

You’ll see quite a few collaborations today on nearly every hit song, why is that?

Budgets and timetables at labels are shrinking. Everyone wants better results…faster, and collaboration helps with this.

Any closing thoughts on what it takes to be a successful songwriter?

Have etiquette when co-writing and never say no outright to any idea.  If you don’t like the idea, put your spin on it to see if there is something you can add to make the idea even better.  Also, trust anyone in the writing room as an artist, and trust your instincts.  Make sure your writing taps into the emotion in the singers voice too.

What matters is the honesty of what the song is communicating.

Yes, aspiring artist should give this approach a try and see how it works for them.
