Indie Bands “Making It” in 2014
There is a lot of diversity in the indie music category…from rock bands like Galaxie 500 to R&B singers like Aloe Blacc. Despite this diversity there is one thing in common…poor streaming service payouts.
Many artists thought Spotify would be the answer for increasing their bottom line, but when a feature in New York magazine detailed how members of the popular indie band Grizzly Bear could sell out Radio City Music Hall, but still not have health insurance…this opened a lot of eyes.
Other successful musicians can relate to this same story. For example, the duo Pomplamoose out of San Francisco lost about $11,000 after factoring in 24 shows worth of ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and corporate sponsorships. Although many argue that Pomplamoose could have cut down expenses to become more profitable, it brings a greater issue of how to make financial success measure up with artistic success.
