Pandora Signs Indie Music Labels to Breakthrough Direct Licensing Deal
Internet radio leader Pandora has created its first ever direct music licensing deal with artists. This is an agreement with Merlin (independent label group). This deal will bring higher payments to artists and more plays on Pandora stations, so this is a big win.
This will mean artists represented by Merlin, such as Lenny Kravits and Arcade Fire, can get more rotations because they can lobby to get Pandora to place their songs earlier in the playlists where this makes sense.
Another added benefit of this deal is that artists will be able to get access to data from Pandora for the first time. This is HUGE because they can make more informed decisions about who to tour with, where to tour, what their set list should be in concerts and what songs they should consider releasing next. This all can translate into a big boost to musicians bottom line.
This deal is very beneficial for Pandora Media too because it can help improve relationships with musicians, who have complained that their royalties on digital streaming services are too low.
