What I Learned About Songwriting

If you are a Songwriter, or aspiring Songwriter, there are some tips that you can use to help your songs stand apart from the crowd.  Regardless of the genre you are writing songs for, there is something that always rings true… you want listeners to play your song over and over again.

Here are some tips you should follow when writing songs.

1) Lyrics Are Crucial– Listeners need to be able to identify with the message you are communicating in your song.  If you don’t put the effort into writing good lyrics, don’t expect people to listen to your music.  Sure, there are songs out there that are far from masterpieces, but they can be great hits if your lyrics resonate with others.

2) Focus on ONE Idea– There are tons of songs out there already and you want yours to stand apart from others.  Come up with one clever angle or story that communicates your ideas or feelings and run with it.  Keep repeating your message so your listeners will have no choice but remember your song

3)  Be Specific– Instead of just saying e.g. Get in my car, girl you say…Climb in the back of  my black cutless supreme, girl.

4) Paint a Picture– This is similar to being specific.  You need to get very descriptive with your details so your ideas paint a clear picture in the listeners mind to really draw them in.  Describing smells, tastes, places and sensations often gets the job done.
