Indie Artists: How to Make Your Music Career Profitable

The music business is not just about creating music, you need to have some business savvy if you want to succeed in the industry. You’ll want to know what’s going on in any business you have, rather than just relying on other business professionals to have your best interest at heart.

Here are some tips to help indie musicians lock down their business successfully

1. Create a business plan and mission statement

Sure, you may not want to spend the time working on a business plan or mission statement, but taking the time to do both can help you focus your day to day operations, and better position yourself to achieve your goals.

2. Analyze what it takes to make a profit

You need to know exactly how much money is coming in and how much is going out if you want to be successful in the music business.  Know your products value, and be confident of that value so you can generate more sales and negotiate successfully as needed.

3. Get everything in writing

One bad gig can send your career in the wrong direction and lead to a lawsuit.  That is why it is extremely important that you get EVERYTHING in writing so there are no misunderstandings and you protect your intellectual property.

4.  Always be professional

Always make sure you’re professional.  You may be a fantastic artist, but if nobody wants to work with you, this can stall your career really fast.  Stay professional, and this can help you improve your credibility and build your business in the long run.
