The Things No One Tells You About Being an Artist Part 2

Our last post covered the things no one tells you about being an artist.

Here are a few other areas you should be aware of.

Always be prepared to be on camera– As you know there are digital devices around you at all times.  Many people are itching to pull out their smartphone to take a picture or video and the last thing you want is to have someone post a picture or video of you performing that doesn’t show you at your best.  When you are ready to perform live make sure your performance is tight so so your photo or video doesn’t go viral for the wrong reasons.

Don’t expect a response when you contact the media–  Its understandable that you want the media to contact you right back when you reach out to them, but you should know that many won’t even open your mail.  Of course that may be discouraging but keep at it because when you do hear back this can be a huge boost to your music career.

Find out who the sound guy or girl is fast!– Make sure you find out whose doing the sound at your show right after you confirm the date of your show.  Many small businesses and non-profit organizations don’t realize there needs to be sound equipment and there needs to be someone to run it too.  If the sound equipment isn’t provided you have to be prepared to bring your own.

Many won’t understand what you do– Many people won’t understand what you do as an artist so don’t worry about spending too much time trying to explain yourself when not necessary. You may try to explain that you’re running a business and not just sitting around at home chillin’ and watching tv all day, but many just won’t understand.  Spend less time stressing about this and more time focusing on what you need to do to succeed in your music career.

Have confidence in your talent– It may hard to stay positive at times when things don’t go as you expect in your career but stay positive, confident and believe in yourself.  Learn from any miss-steps but stay focused on achieving your music goals.
