YouTube Tells Musicians “You Need to Create a lot of Content” to Succeed

If you’re like many musicians, you may spend quite a bit of time on YouTube and may have even posted up a video of your music or band playing.

That’s a good start, but if you really want to get your music noticed on YouTube you’re going to have to keep posting new content…and a lot of it.

This really isn’t consistent with how tradtional music works, according to former major label representative and current manager of content partnerships for YouTube Music in the Benlux and Nordics region, Jeroen Bouwman.

He said…

“If an artist had an album that had 12 tracks, it would come out, have one, two or if you were lucky three singles come out over five to six months, then the artist would go quiet for 12 to 18 months until their next album came out. But to be successful on YouTube, going quiet for 12 to 18 months doesn’t really work. Those labels or artists that are successful on YouTube? They’re posting a lot of content.”

It’s important fo musicians not only to think of  YouTube as a promotion platform, but as a vehicle for making money on.  You will definitely have to invest the time in YouTube though to achieve the results you’re looking for. Spend some time checking out what other successful musicians are doing on YouTube to get a lot of visibility, and leverage what makes sense for your music business.

Regardless of the route you choose on YouTube, make sure you’re prepared to create good quality content on a regular basis to increase your exposure.  This can help keep your band and music relevant, your fans engaged, and increase your income via increased music sales and advertising. Creating great content consistently can ultimately position you to attract sponsors and other companies with deep pockets so you can really take your music career to new levels.
